Eugenia Loli takes pictures from 20th Century magazines and science publications and reinvents them into something new, exuberant, witty and joyous. The Sphinx (Aka “Cosmic Gymnophoria”) is a composite mix of a 1950s postcard from Terrace Motel, Tucson, AZ, a picture of The Great Orion Nebula, the pyramids of Giza and a mid-Century pinup. Loli, a Greek-born artist born in Greece now living in California, aims to create a narrative. “Sometimes the scene is witty or sarcastic, some times it’s horrific with a sense of danger or urgency, some times it’s chill,” she tells us. “I leave it to the viewer’s imagination to fill-in the blanks of the story.”
