..We arrived at the hotel. I can’t say I’m not disappointed…
I have long collected discarded postcards found in charity shops, booksellers, and second-hand stores. The messages written to loved ones back home give a snapshot of the things which were important to the writer at the time. Some postcards are funny, some moving, most are just:
Arrived safely at Vi’s. Super trip, sun shining. Out for dinner tonight. Back on Friday.
But a few are like entries from a private diary. Please note, names changed.
Jean’s had her lovely hair cut. It’s very short. Very, very short. She says it’s all the rage. I’m not so sure…
It’s nice to be here but I wouldn’t want to live here.
We saw Kipling’s house and Mark thought he saw Richard Attenborough, but I wasn’t so sure. If it was him then he’s awfully small.
Here are the twelve apostles standing in the grounds of Dartington Hall. The view is from the terraces of what may have been a pear pit.
We spent the day on the beach, Ronnie got burnt, then we went swimming.
Deal Pier is over a thousand feet long and the taxi driver said Charles Hawtrey, him off the Carry On films lived here. I’m not sure why.
We walked and walked and walked.
Your father got drunk last night and lost his dentures…
Arrived Glasgow safely, nice trip, rained in the afternoon, will call if I get a chance. Camping tomorrow.
We had fish tea and walked along the promenade. I’m not looking forward to tomorrow.
…the dogs love it here.
…but there’s not much to do here.
We visited most of places on this card.
Weather lovely.
We went up the Eifel Tower and went to Versailles.
Helen had food poisoning and didn’t come to Cannes. We went for the day and met some nice French lads on the beach.
….everyone speaks German….
More drinking tonight!
The hotel’s near Times Square, and is really swanky.
On the 86th floor of the Empire State Building you can’t hear the traffic below.
James said to come here. I now know why!
…to be honest I am a bit disappointed.
I love it here.
We did a studio tour. The kids loved it.
The weather is beautiful. Sunshine all day, every day. It’s lovely to lie in the pool at night and see the stars.
Yes, that’s what the traffic’s like.
Met a couple from Newton Mearns.
I’ll probably be home before you get this card.
One last night, train home tomorrow.
