Fans’ love for the Grateful Dead is manifest in hundreds of letters enclosed in decorated envelopes they wrote the band between 1970 and 1995. Housed at the University of Santa Cruz, the Grateful Dead Archive features many of these letters. A lot were left by fans at Jerry Garcia’s memorial altar in Golden Gate Park in 1995. Many of them were written by fans requesting tickets to one of the band’s giddying live shows.
The Archive is “socially constructed”, calling for fans to send in their memories and ephemera. So if like Picasso, Edward Gorey or Mr Bingo you decorated a letter, the archive would love to hear from you.
