Leland Bobbé took these photographs of burlesque performers in his New York City studio between 2010- 2011. The stars of this enduring entertainment are captured in portrait. They are alone, shorn of the crowd and stage. Leland’s technical skill is evident, but the pictures are more than beautifully composed snapshots. We see the subjects’ spirit. Used to being watched, appraised and ogled, these intimate pictures allow us to see the performers behind the show, the person being entirely themselves, albeit in daring make-up, non drip-dry clothes, balloons and tassels (natch.). The overriding impression is fun, followed by resilience, thoughtfulness and more than a tinge of self-mockery – cop a load of those big ballooning bosoms; the sexually alluring pig woman; the nice Jewish girl and her bacon nipple tassels. You want to see the woman of your fantasy? Sure you can handle it?
