IN 1976, Manchester City and Newcastle United contested the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium. It was Newcastle first appearance in the final. City had been there before, winning the Cup in 1970 by defeating West Bromwich Albion, and finishing runners-up to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1974. On February 28 1976, Manchester City won the match 2–1 to win the competition for the second time. The match is best known for its winning goal, an overhead kick by Dennis Tueart. This is the story of the game in photos: Things to note for new fans: no sponsor’s name on the chest, the 100,000 crowd mostly standing; great homemade banners; no players’ wives and kids on the pitch.
