The Day-Glo Corporation produced this lush coil-bound book in 1969 to showcase their latest line of fluorescent inks. As David Day writes at The Peculiar Manicule, “Nearly every one of its sixty-eight pages is brilliant, including an elaborate twelve page insert of hand-screened Marilyn Monroe prints by Bert Stern. Day-Glo Corp., 1969.”
The book begins with a history of day-glo, the invention to teenaged brothers, Joe and Bob Switzer, whose experiments with light, chemicals and shellac in their dad’s drugstore led to them forming ‘The Switzer Brothers’ Ultra Violet Laboratories Company, Inc” in their mother’s kitchen in Berkeley, California. Further experiments led to them creating a florescent paint that seemed to glow in daylight. And so ‘Day-Glo’ was coined.
