One Saturday in October, 1937, Arthur Rothstein arrived in Hagerstown, Maryland (pop. 31,000). On a mission from the Farm Security Administration to record life in the city, Arthur Rothstein photographed what he saw. He popped his head into the barber’s shop, watched an open-air furniture auction, spotted men idling on the street, and showed us the shops and the goods on sale.
