Although nowadays many are flourishing again, the 1960s were almost the British seaside resorts’ last hurrah. Their decline began for the very same reason they became successful in the first place – relatively cheap and quick transport.
Suddenly foreign holiday destinations, in Greece and Southern Spain in particular became affordable and accessible. Initially it was the rise of the package holiday and subsequently the European low-cost airlines which made holidaying abroad actually cheaper than the home-grown alternative.
