The Brilliant Pop Art Zodiac Match Box Collection From 1970

Pair the era's love of smoking with star signs and these designs epitomise an era

These Zodiac Match box labels were designed by Spanish designer Cruz Novillo and Olmos Fosforos Del Pirineo S.A., around 1970.

The extent to which the fashion for astrology and the zodiac permeated western culture in the 1960s and 1970s is not to be underestimated. Pair it with the era’s lure of smoking and matches boxes, like these by Peter Max and from Eastern Europe, epitomise the time.

From Age of Aquarius at the top of the charts to horoscope booklets in every supermarket line, astrology was everywhere. From Salvador Dali’s 12 Signs Of The Zodiac (1967), Peter Max’s Dazzling Cosmic Astrologicalendar (1970) to Pop Art Games, the Zodiac was cool.
