Mark E. Smith (5 March 1957 – 24 January 2018), The Fall’s entertaining frontman who explained his band’s sound thus, “If it’s me an your granny on the bongos, it’s the Fall” – a handy guide given the band’s ever-changing line up (40-plus members; keyboardist Ruth Daniels lasted a day; “It’s a bit like a football team. Every so often you have to get rid of the centre-forward,” explained Smith) – spoke to the NME for the August 15, 1981 issue. For the magazine’s regular feature “Portrait of the Artist as a Consumer”, Smith picked his favorite art, writers, comedians, books, films, and even other music. Ted Mills has transcribed the story.
