THE New York Subway’s 28 stations were opened for business on October 27, 1904. It now boasts 468 stations in operation. The busiest station is Times Sq-42 St. In 2012, 5.4 million rides were made every week on the Subway. There are 6,311 carriages. When they’re old, these carriages are dropped into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s not all glamour on the New York Subway. Our pictorial history takes in murder, robbery, graffiti, vigilantes, protests of fare hikes, Union strikes and sweltering and cramped conditions.
