Debbie Harry, David Bowie and Elton John Star in Paula Yates’ Book Rock Stars in Their Underpants (1980)

In 1980, Paula Yates (April 24 1960 – September 17 2000) produced a book of photos called Rock Stars in Their Underpants.

Yates was the fluffy, vivacious, needy, media wanna-be (and would-be) the Boomtown Rats called “The Limpet”. She divorced that band’s lead singer, Bob Geldof, in 1996 to be with Michael Hutchence (he committed suicide in 1997; they met when she interviewed him on a bed for Channel 4’s Big Breakfast). She discovered, also in 1997, that her father was former Opportunity Knocks presenter Hughie Green – until then she thought her dad was Jess Yates, a presenter of Yorkshire Television’s religious programme Stars On Sunday. Yates had been conceived within weeks of Jess’s marriage to her mother.

Andy Warhol called her book “the greatest work of art in the last decade”. Well, Warhol did love Polaroids.

Look out for Lemmy from Motorhead, Debbie Harry, Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Stewart in his budgie smugglers, David Lee Roth and Ted Nugent.
