Scenes From A Rainy Day In Norwich Connecticut (1940)

In November 1940, Jack Delano took these pictures of a rainy day in Norwich, Connecticut, for the Farm Security Administration. As ever, don’t try to tell the story, just imagine one between the pictures.

“The rain to the wind said,
You push and I’ll pelt.’
They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged–though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.”
― Robert Frost

“On the fifth day, which was a Sunday, it rained very hard. I like it when it rains hard. It sounds like white noise everywhere, which is like silence but not empty.”
― Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

“The unwelcome November rain had perversely stolen the day’s last hour and pawned it with that ancient fence, the night.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise

“Hello!”
He said hello and then said, “What are you up to now?”
“I’m still crazy. The rain feels good. I love to walk in it.
“I don’t think I’d like that,” he said.
“You might if you tried.”
“I never have.”
She licked her lips. “Rain even tastes good.”
“What do you do, go around trying everything once?” he asked.
“Sometimes twice.”
― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

So if you want to love me
Then darlin’ don’t refrain
Or I’ll just end up walkin’
In the cold November rain –

I saw you (and him, and him) walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I’ll never be the same

The world began a long time ago,
With, hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that doesn’t matter, our play is done,
And we’ll try to please you every day.

– William Shakespeare, The Twelfth Night

Rain has fallen all the day.
O come among the laden trees:
The leaves lie thick upon the way
Of memories.

Some folks can lose the blues in their hearts
But when I think of you another shower starts
Into each life some rain must fall
But too much is falling in mine

Broken windows and empty hallways
A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it’s going to rain today

– Randy Newman, I Think It’s Gonna Rain Today

Now that it’s raining more than ever
Know that we’ll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella

I’m singin’ in the rain
Just singin’ in the rain
What a glorious feelin’
I’m happy again.
I’m laughing at clouds.
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love.

– Gene Kelly, Singin’ In The Rain
