The Life And Funeral Of Glasgow’s Jimmy Reid In Pictures

GORDON Brown didn’t make as ‘em laugh at the funeral of the shipyard union leader Jimmy Reid at Govan Old Parish Church in Glasgow. Scotland’s first minister, Alex Salmond wasn’t that funny. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson didn’t make them laugh. But somehow Billy Connolly did.

Reid, who famously spearheaded the shipbuilders’ “work-in” on the Clyde in 1971 and 1972 – a campaign that stymied government attempts to close the yards – was a stalwart of the 1970s labour movement. He died aged 78.

RIP.
